Purchased Purple Air Monitors, City of Austin - Great Experience!!!

Hello, I started a dialogue to ensure our purchase was free of sales taxes, as a government entity. We have purchased these monitors before through another vendor and the experience was painful. I'm so glad we opted to purchase directly through this vendor. My entire experience has been 5 Stars. Communication, response, professional and very positive experience overall.

Dead channel in less than a week - but easy PMS5003 replacement

Sensor replacement on my 2025 "PM II Clasic" is far easier than the replacement instructions posted by PurpleAir. Minus one star for not having a sensor replacement video or photos for the current model, but believe PurpleAir when they say the new bracket makes sensor replacement easier... with no taping and folding together of boards and cables.

In my case "Channel A" flat lined at zero counts and it turns out that the fan no longer spins. It's not jammed, but just not being powered. I confirmed the sensor is dead when plugged into my ESPHome PMSX003 indoor unit reading zero counts with the fan blades not moving. Dropping in a replacement I ordered with my original purchase, "Channel A" returned and the "confidence level" is improving over time.... now at 55% after 2 hours.

I purchased the spare sensor kit for hobby projects, but it was very useful to have a spare sensor on hand to resolve the problem. Hopefully support will offer a replacement sensor, but the big picture of these sensors is relatively frequent sensor replacements. I have seen 1 year expected life, while 3 years is mentioned elsewhere.

Integration with AirNow and Wunderground has been dubious at best, but when the confidence level is very low with one bad sensor I'll give data publishing a chance to reestablish with Wunderground. Currently my "3RD" status is RED meaning Wunderground is in Error, which matches the status_6 "3" value the local http://yourSensorIP/json URL.

My driving reason for buying a PurpleAir is to get my location onto AirQuality maps with the nearest permanent sensor over 60 miles away. The upper Midwest has had many days of heavy forest fire smoke this summer.

I chose the PMS5003 based sensor because of its longer record of EPA validation. On paper the FLEX PMS6003 should have longer life [MTTF >10Y vs. >3Y for the Classic PMS5003] but it's mystifying unless one laser sits idle in the 6003 until the other fails. Similarly insects don't care if the laser is functional. The newer PMSA003 does not have the longer life that the PMS6003, so it's not clear that "newer" is better with these sensors.

I SHOULD have taken a photo of the open unit, but Purple Air should provide photos showing the new design.

Friendly product suggestion, a discounted sensor kit to bundle with the original purchase of the PA II Classic, which does not require the 3D bracket nor the non-conductive tape that comes with the retail kit for both old/new Classic sensors. You will want to have spare sensor(s) on hand to drop in.

Terrific monitor

We bought a PurpleAir Classic Plus monitor because there was nothing in our immediate area. There have been a lot of wildfires this year and smoke. Being older, we wanted to be aware when the air becomes less healthy. This monitor gives us peace of mind and let's us share its readings with our neighbors.
